MicroAlgarium: Discover the Invisible Ocean

Unveiling the hidden world of marine microbes through science, art, and storytelling.

MicroAlgarium is a creative–scientific initiative led by oceanographer, microbial ecologist, and National Geographic Explorer Catherine Ribeiro.

Born from a deep fascination with the microscopic life that powers the oceans, it weaves together scientific research on marine microbiology and storytelling to reveal the hidden world of microalgae and other planktonic organisms to scientists, students, and the general public.

Rooted in scientific research, MicroAlgarium builds on several international projects and expeditions focused on polar and coastal microbial diversity, climate change, and environmental resilience. Together, these initiatives form the foundation of MicroAlgarium’s mission: to connect people with the invisible ocean.

Mission

At MicroAlgarium, we believe that the tiniest forms of life can tell the biggest stories about our planet.

To explore and understand the diversity of marine microbes
We investigate marine microbial life combining field expeditions, laboratory cultivation, and advanced molecular tools.
By isolating new strains and performing experiments, we seek to understand how these organisms adapt, evolve, and respond to a changing environment.

To share their hidden beauty through images, videos, and creative collaborations
Through microscopy photography, storytelling, and artistic partnerships, we reveal the incredible forms, movements, and colors of microscopic life.

To connect science and society, inspiring curiosity about the invisible foundations of ocean life.

By combining rigorous research with accessible communication, we aim to foster ocean literacy, inspire new generations of scientists, and cultivate appreciation for the unseen biodiversity that sustains life on Earth.
