Microalgae culture collections represent much more than algae storage. In this video, leading scientists explain the importance of microalgae collections to ecology, taxonomy, and biotechnology.

Meet Pyramimonas gelidicola, a polar microalga with four flagella and crazy morphological variations.

Dive into the captivating microcosm of a Chilean pond. Join us as we explore the hidden wonders beneath the surface, showcasing a diverse array of microscopic life, including diatoms, Vorticella, testate amoebae, rotifers, green algae, and more!

In this video, we present the characterization project of two new green microalgae of the genus Chlamydomonas, isolated in Bahía Chile (Antarctic Peninsula): WAP05 and WAP30. These psychrophilic species exhibit unique adaptations to extreme cold, with potential for biotechnological applications such as the production of antifreeze lipids and proteins.

The strains were officially deposited in the Roscoff Culture Collection (France).

This work is part of the project funded by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH):
